The missing piece of glass looks vaguely squirrel-like when viewed from the side. I have no idea what this means.

Dittos. I've read very little Stephen King, but this makes me think of Unknown Hinson's "Foggy Winders".
Made me think of that Prince song, "Purple Squirrel".
