It's that damn engine noise again - the one I can only hear when the car is not in the shop.

True story. Years ago we owned a VW van. Periodically my son would say "do you hear that rattle?". No one else heard it. Then the engine went out and had to be replaced. The shop found an empty German soda can up inside the tunnel that ran control cables back to the engine.
