The meaning of that quote is a total mystery to me!

GarandFan:

Charles always had Great Expectations when listening to a certain Christmas Carole while traveling and telling the Tale of Two Cities.

Ed B:

Could be a comment on his own family situation, actually. He fathered ten children and was pretty much emotionally estranged from all of them, as well as from his wife.

Dickens once commented that he had raised "the largest family with the smallest disposition for doing anything for themselves". He considered them to be financially burdensome and incompetent.

A tough shadow to live under, indeed.
