OK this actually brings back some memories...
This was back a few years ago, before things got really out of hand (umm...)
Anyway, I was a member of law enforcement out West and was headed to Sacramento for training. I was asked to report in uniform but without a sidearm, and was so equipped when I went to board the plane.
As I approached the gate, I was actually asked, in front of every other passenger present, if I was carrying a weapon.
Really.
I indicated (with a straight face) that I was armed. They then asked me to remove my concealed weapon and surrender it before boarding.
Yeah, right.
I asked (politely, but smiling) to speak to my enquisitor's supervisor. He was good enough to do so.
Now, at this point most of the folks in line were having a bit of a chuckle seeing the police guy getting the run around; I have to admit to a certain amount of ironic amusement myself. But finally the supervisor came out, asked me to step into his office where I could tell what I was carrying (but not where). He then asked if I would serve as the air marshal on the flight.
So I was the air marshal for a 30 minute flight from LAX to Sacramento.

Back in the 70's one of my college jobs was airport carry on checks and running people through the metal detectors.
The only people then that could carry handguns on the concourse and the aircraft were Federal officers - FBI, DEA, ATF, etc.
A lot of small town police officers were not very happy with us having to take and hold their handguns while they were on the concourse. State LEOs weren't allowed to carry them on the concourse either.
We were always in the middle between the Feds and the airline gate agents. The most common conflict was of all things, knitting needles.
We also had to manually check purses and carry-ons - this was long before they had xray machines to scan them.
