Many people don't know (or choose to forget) that St. Patrick was originally from the Roman-controlled part of the British Isles. Captured by pagan Irish raiders, he was a slave in Ireland for seven years before returning to Roman Britannia. After being ordained as a Christian priest, he returned to Ireland to spread the faith. As a former slave, he was among the first in written history to condemn the wide-spread institution of slavery.
