Automotive Report Toon

BUSTER-Victoria024.jpg

This toon appears in the June issue of Allen Forkum's paper, Automotive Report. It goes along with a humor column, by Buster Mcnutt, that bemoans the passing of the rear wheel drive era.

GarandFan:

One of the reasons for RWD lasting as long as it has is because of police departments. Cops knock a lot of front ends out of alignment on a daily basis. Just imagine what they'll do now with FWD.

Correct. In the hands of a highly skilled driver, rear wheel drive handles better than front wheel drive resulting in more speed - important in high speed chases.

The Ford Crown Vic hung in limited production for a couple of extra years to supply police departments and the taxi market. You couldn't buy one at a dealer, though.

There is also a business that specializes in rebuilding Crown Vic police cruisers because your can't get them new any more.

So expect high speed chases to gradually fade into our memories. Not that this is a totally bad thing.

I not only miss having rear-wheel drive, but I also miss having a car with enough guts to make it worthwhile.

These days I'm pretty much forced to have sub-compact front wheel drive, 4 cylinder econo-boxes.

Oh for the good old days.

Tom Wms.:

I have been connected with the automtoive business since 1976. I HATE front wheel drive. FWD is said to be better in snow than RWD, but in the Mid-South, about all we get is ice, so it doesn't matter. In rain, FWD is dangerous. Not only do you lose control, but you also lose the ability to power out of certain situations. Plus, when cornering, the rear end wants to come around and meet you at the front door. For more insight, check this article, written on 4/11/03.

Terwiliger:

I like the ride of RWD better (one of the reasons I drive a pickup & got rid of my FWD car), but I wouldn't shell out the money that "performance" cars fetch--& I don't drive aggressively--so handling is pretty much a non-issue for me (gas is too expensive & money is too tight to run a vehicle hard anyway). If the road is icy or it's raining hard & puddling, I just slow down.

I'm in the "winter ice belt" too, & I thought FWD went fine on ice (& it was nice not having to load weight over the rear axle in the winter to gain traction). The biggest problem I have is with all of the idiots on the road who don't know how to drive in adverse conditions.

Between me and my husband we've owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I've settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.
