Well...yes & no. To the degree that the answer is "yes": I think the "quotation" is hilarious. That's why I saved it in the first place.
To the degree that the answer is "no": Because they couldn't produce or reproduce books very easily doesn't mean they couldn't write them--& while the only writings that survive from that period are clay (& perhaps stone), they did use papyrus as well.

Not to make light of anyones' particular faith:
SPAM... hoards of locusts... frogs raining from the sky...
I'd say that--to some degree--SPAM is an outgrowth of the "modern" plague of darkness--that being barely literate (& functionally illiterate) masses with access to numerous outlets of expression & the mantra of "free speech" (with minimal thought).
