"The world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong in the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially. If you are none of these you can be sure it will kill you too but there will be no special hurry."

What do you use for your caricatures? Chalk pastel pencils?

GarandFan:

Nice quote Kevin.

He's also the patron saint of fishermen and hunters.

HEY KEVIN

I'll do as much as I can in watercolor, then I'll use a certain amount of color pencil for detail and accent (shadowing or highlights).

I try really hard to keep the "multi" out of "mult-media". It looks sharper and more effortless.

Kukn:

Yay, I got the reference this time...

I really like the shade of red you're using for the robes. Also I'm a sucker for themed picture series. How many patron saints are you planning on doing all in all? Or is the number indefenite?

Nice. Pity you couldn't have worked his liver into the picture. Not a pretty sight, in it's later years.

"An intelligent man is sometimes forced to be drunk to spend time with his fools."

HEY KUHN

Right now, the criteria for doing the patron saint series is that they are deceased and have a distinctive place in my aesthetic or social conciousness. And I guess I'll do as many as it takes to run out the string. Many more are on the way....

BTW....that red you like is five or six layers of watercolor with additions of blue in each layer.

Jonathan Hohensee:

My friend's grandfather was actually his gardner during Hemmingway's last days. I don't remember much about what he told us about him other than that he'd lock himself in his house's top floor and drink for days on end.

Thanks, John. They do complement each other very nicely. And I appreciate your response to Kukn's mention of the robe. The speckles feel like velvet, and it's probably the blue that gives it a sense of royalty.

Kukn:

Cool, cheers.
