UPDATE: SOLD, JUNE 10th
Going through my watercolor folder and found this. Did this a while back after visiting a friend's place in Colorado. There's a kind of a Wyeth-meets-O'keefe thing happening.

I've done a small collection of figure pieces with a crackled surface. Playing with the concept of "Time vs. Beauty".

I did this for Kurt a few Christmases ago. He'd been featured in the AJC for his work as piano tuner and I decided to turn his photo into a watercolor.
This is a 7" x 7" pastel study for a larger oil-on-canvas piece I'm working on. Don't have a title yet...
Did this waaaaaay back in my experimental days. I actually did this 5-foot piece with a turkey baster. It was inspired by Ralph Steadman's whacky illustrations found in his book, "Scar Strangled Banger".
TABOO

Finished this one recently. I was interested in playing with a paradise theme.
This is a little 9" x 6" work on paper that may turn into a larger canvas piece. No title yet....
A little multi-media study juxtaposing the soft organic quality of the figure with the hard edge graphic quality of the wood working tools.

This was an exercise in treating the manneqin as if it was flesh and blood-more heft and roundness. I think the dramatic lighting helps break down the stiffness that usually accompanies a typical mannequin study.

I wanted to acknowledge today's 7th anniversary by posting this painting I did in February, 2002. It's a large painting with two important details you may not see well. First, there is a smudge of smoke on the horizon representing the World Trade Center. Second, the figure in the foreground is a U.S. soldier in deep shadow and you may not make out the equipment on his back. I chose the Oklahoma prairie as the setting.
I sold this painting to architect Fred Hackl and it was the beginning of many commissions he had me paint for his house in Michigan.
I was devastated by the attack and it took me awhile to attempt a painting that captured the sadness and pride I felt that lonely day in September, 2001.

This is a bit of commentary on minimalist art. It may be a bit hard to make out (image is so small) but that is a piece of red yarn taped to a wall with a matted frame hung in front of it. I enjoyed using highly representational painting techniques to reveal a soulless piece of work.

Recently screened "Pollock" with Ed Harris as Jackson Pollock. Very inspiring in the sense that the bio-pic explores what every fine artist must decide: Why I am I doing this and how can I sustain the meaning.
I highly recommend the movie for its lust for creative freedom and the courage it takes to pull it off.
This, of course, is NOT my genre of work, but I must admit it's very entertaining to
dabble.

I painted this as a companion piece to "Silver Ankh" (posted Ocober 31, '08).
A little experiment. I took a small pastel landscape (11" x 6") I found in my sketchbook and photoshopped into a benign office setting. Once the scale is expanded to fit on the wall, the "small" piece has a depth and weight to it that surprised me.
I think taking some of my smaller pieces and blowing them up ten times (or so) might be a fun way to develop a new body of work.

This is the second finished painting that has come out of my new art space in Decatur. It's kind of a companion piece to "Transforming".
I've got a third and fourth waiting for finishing touches. I'm in the painting studio about three to fours a day and my production rate is something I haven't experienced since my first studio space I had in the 90's. Feels like I'm in a zone.....

This is the third piece in a body of work I'm producing. More to come....

This is the fourth painting I've finished since working in my "new" studio. This one has a detailed "tiled" surface that is lost at this tiny scale.
This is a page from "Working at Olsons: Watercolor and Drawings by Andrew Wyeth". I purchased the book at Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, when I visited his museum in 1998.
I've cherished his watercolors and egg temperas ever since I can remember. To this day, I'm inspired by his work ethic, his dignity and his focus on timeless themes. Godspeed, Mr Wyeth.
"To be interested soley in technique would be very superficial to me. If I have an emotion, before I die, that's deeper than any emotion than I've ever had, then I will paint a more powerful picture that will have nothing to do with just technique, but will go beyond it."

This is the announcement I'll be printing up to put in some of local watering holes here in Decatur. We'll see what happens....

SPECIAL NOTE: Tonight's my "Angel and Machinations" opening. I'll get some snaps from the show and share them in a day or two. Should be interesting.
Last night at Sylvia Cross' SYCAMORE PLACE GALLERY here in Decatur, I had the pleasure to show fourteen paintings to friends and patrons. It came off beautifully. While the guests enjoyed wine and Greg Connor's splendid acoustic performance, they took in my work and were very generous with they comments.
And the kicker? I sold "Transformation", "Receiving" and "Terra Mechanica II".
Thanks to all my friends who did me the honor of attending and a special shout out to Brandon Longley, the fine eye behind the camera.
And a fat, sloppy thanks to Sylvia who is the heart and soul of an invigorating showplace and is incredibly inspiring to those who know and love her. Her insightful encouragement is a gift.
This group is featured in my "Angels and Machinations" show that is running until March 28 at 120 Sycamore Place Gallery here in Decatur, GA.
Each separate panel is 16" x 16" which uses a Chinese character as a basis for the trompe l'oeil tape and paper images. Each panel is oil on wood.

This is part of a new body of work I have going at my studio. I've been trying to recall my southern roots and painting what I consider to be my version of Southern Gothic. I'd like the artwork to be mysterious and dream-like with just a hint of eery. Yet, I'd like to keep them beautiful...somehow.

This is recently finished painting that's part of a Southern gothic theme I've been developing for my October 3rd show at Sylvia's 120 Sycamore Place Gallery. I'm titling the show "The Southerness".
I have mentioned on my other painting posts that I've been working on a body of work that focuses on my memories growing up in the South. I'm twelve finished pieces into this endeavor and I think it has been a wonderful way to explore the enigmatic nature of this region.

This a commissioned piece based on a study I posted April 12, 2008. I get a lot of satisfaction seeing that little watercolor study become a full-blown oil painting.
Thank you, Mr. Dumont.
This is the small poster that's going up around Decatur announcing my up-coming show. Hope to see lots of my good friends there.
The next few images are from this Saturday's show at Sylvia Cross's 120 Sycamore Place Gallery in Decatur, Ga.
The music by Smoke was fabulous and the turn out was very nice. Thanks to all y'all who came out to catch my new work. And, or course, a special shout-out to Sylvia who put on a helluva show.
I combined the three portraits as if they were individual pieces taped to a rustic stone wall. I got a chance to play with trompe l'oeil effects and show my painting stages- sketching, black and white oil study then full color oil study. These technical stages also mimic the developmental stages of a person, too.
36" x 36"
oil on canvas
Special thanks goes out to Mr. Dumont who commissioned the piece and entrusted
me with the concept of such a peculiar portrait.
I was commissioned a couple of months ago to do a portrait incorporating three different ages of the same person into ONE painting.
I 'shopped my March 3, 2008 post "Shadowplayer" and found an image from one of my reference books in which I inserted a portion of the painting.

This another piece in my new body of work called "Painting is a Verb". These works explore the relationship between words and images using trompe l'oeil techniques.

This is what my recent oil painting,"Identify" (see January 22, 2010 post) , might look like in a classy gallery.
I enjoy 'shopping a small watercolor study and blowing it up to fit a large space. It's interesting to me how simply sizing a piece way up reveals an emotional depth the smaller piece (4" x 6") can't approach.
DAN BARBER
12" x 9"
watercolor
I worked on this all day Saturday. I spent most of my effort on nailing an accurate pencil drawing, then I use many thin layers of watercolor for texture and warmth. I like to go back with pencil to bring it together and add touches of detail.
Another smallish watercolor study I found in the attic. Still like this one. Very summery.
This is a commissioned oil painting I did last summer and I thought it fit this week's theme over at Illustration Friday quite nicely.
This is a 9"x7" composition in which 'shopped two graphite drawings I've done recently. I'd like to turn this into a large oil painting at some point.
I've been enjoying doing small watercolor studies of a group of abstract work that might look wonderful done very large in multi-media fashion. A little p-shop, BANG, a large canvas hanging in a modest den.
Boy, what I would do with a roomy studio that could handle six-foot, eight-foot canvases! I still have faith in my attempts at exploring less literal, more poetic themes that fit in a living space.
These are small watercolor studies I'd like to turn into much larger canvases (6 to 8 foot range) for a show. I've had a love affair with line and texture in all my work, so I thought it could be liberating to do some studies that zero in on that very thing.
Don't worry, I loves me the figurative work, too.
This is a little watercolor study I did recently. I find rendering these slight landscapes very calming.
This a little 8"x8" watercolor study using a single tone. The misty effects are done with very watery layers.
20" x 20"
watercolor on paper
An effective way to enliven original artwork is preparing a space that exploits its' best features. In this case, my landscape watercolor is rather monochromatic with a touch of red, while the viewing area is rather warm. The contrast is thought-provoking and energizes a room.
Once I retain some studio space, I'd like to pursue a body of work the explores trompe l'oeil wall surfaces with bold figure studies that reflect the beauty and angst of city streets. This piece is a combination watercolor study (wall) graphite study (figure) that I created in Photoshop. This would make a sweet 6ft x 4ft painting, I think.
This is a short little lesson in sketching with form and depth. If you can get hold of a HB pencil, a red conte pencil, kneaded eraser, standard pink eraser, a blending stub and some pastels, you can try your hand at this fun, quick technique for dynamic sketches.
Now, with your pastels....
I recently had the chance to do some pet portraiture over the weekend. I discovered I really like the challenge of transforming average photos (the details are crucial) into rich, textured pieces that still have the classic structure and design elements of my other work. I'm pretty thrilled with the prospect of exploring this genre and meeting enthusiastic pet owners. Hope to hear from you. Please contact me about artwork size and prices at john555cox@hotmail.com.
Might be a bit late for a Christmas gift this year, but I like to think y'all might consider a mixed media portraiture piece of your own ANY time. Thanks for the warm comments about this new addition to my multi-faceted art career. You can always reach me at my e-mail address, john555cox@hotmail.com if you'd like to discuss how to go about getting that special rendition of the family pet.
Note how I had to compensate for the wicked shadow that was around the Great Dane's head in the digital photo above.

In commemoration of a relatively rare snow day here in Atlanta, I did this little watercolor study in my studio today, a huge mug of chia at my elbow and Miles slowly creeping through my headphones.
This is part of my ongoing exploration into expressionistic paintings. I'm very interested in turning these 7"x7" acrylic studies into full blown canvas works that measure 4 ft. x 4ft. Scaling these much, much larger is an important aspect to these works.
Starting on a possible show featuring my forays into expressionistic work.
This is a 7"x7" acrylic on paper study. It's part of a group of large paintings I'll get to when I swing some additional studio space.

This little drawing was photoshopped into an image of a living room with a large white wall. It's fun way to scale a small piece that might become a much larger canvas work.

Fun with taking a drawing from my sketchbook and p-shopping it into a living room image. A delightful way to "scale up" your small artwork.
