Cox & Forkum Editorial Cartoons

Nonnegotiable.gif

Most people know my work through Cox & Forkum Editorial Cartoons, which I started illustrating with Allen Forkum in August 2001. We have over 1,000 cartoons on our Web site, so be sure to poke around. You'll also find the cartoons compiled three books.

This cartoon happens to be one in which I came of with the scenario. Allen and I tweaked it to better fit the news at the time. And unfortunately Israel eventually retured to its past record of negotiating for hostages.

Watterson

Watterson_cover.gif

I'm a BIG Calvin and Hobbes fan. I have the book Calvin and Hobbes: Sunday Pages 1985 to 1995 by Bill Watterson, and on a whim I decided to have some fun mimicking the cover with caricatures of me and Allen (that's me up front). It gave me a chance to study Watterson's wonderful water color work. And my efforts didn't go to waste; we used it to announce our hiatus from editorial cartooning today.

Personal Note on Commenting Here....

I've been doing a little catch-up reading on the "Kept Secrets" thread. YOWZA!

I'll simply (yet emphatically) suggest this: Keep them interestesting, brief and without malice. I'm more likely to respond and keep the conversation going. Big, giant thread comments confuse me. Let's remember this is a cocktail party and not a college debate.

How to Draw President G.W.Bush

howTO.gif

Amaze your friends! Next time you're killing time at a bar with your friends, whip out a cocktail napkin and a ballpoint pen and let it rip. Hilarity ensues....

1. Start with a diamond shape.

2. High up towards the top of the diamond, draw two eyebrows that look like caterpillars mating. Add a short, straight bridge of the nose with very wide, flaring nostrils. Feel free to exaggerate here.

3. Bush has a long upper lip and a smallish mouth shaped kind of like a turtle's. Add a little shadow underneath the lower lip and some crease lines around the nose and eyes. Add a crappy, old white guy's haircut. Stupid bangs intensifies his redneck roots.

4. Jumbo ears. Can't go wrong here.

5. Add a suit and tie. Hell, he can be wearing anything. Your the editorial artist. Make a statement.

6. Ink accordingly. Everyone inks differently. Be creative.

There, now. Go get syndicated and live in a refrigerator box for the next few years and you're well on your way to being a professional editorial catoonist with a life expectancy of the average rabbit.

I don't think art is propaganda; it should be something that liberates the soul, provokes the imagination and encourages people to go further. It celebrates humanity instead of manipulating it.

Gig In Progress

pinata.jpg

SCENE: At my local watering hole, minding my own business, downing a few High Lifes (Lives?) to shut up the voices in my head.....

H (screen printer): Hey, John. I got a Mexican restaurant that wants a smiling pinata with the caption "I'd Hit That!" on a t-shirt they can sell to customers.

Me: What's the budget?

H: I can go as high as $75.

Me (with a YOU-GOTTA-BE-KIDDIN' face): WHAT!?

H (giving me the fish-eye...he knows me oh too well): You heard me.

Me: Uh....that's a little low....(time to pull a face...something that says I'm thinking it over like I'm trying to dissect a radioactive frog...) Okay, I'm in.

H: When can I see a pencil?

Me: Tomorrow.
