Automotive Report Cover

AR-dec-statues.jpg

This month's cover art of Allen Forkum's newspaper was a bit of a challenge. Having to render stone sculptures depicting aspects of automotive service, yet still with a bit of whimsy, is the kind of work that makes image-creation fascinating.

Very interesting art! It made me read the whole article as well - it was a good read too.

Terwiliger:

"Why Your Company's Culture Matters... & How to Improve It."

This is REALLY funny to me.

I'd add, "... & Why it Rarely Ever Happens in Corporate America."

I finished B-School WAY in the top tier of my class, & when I went out job hunting, I had a heck of a time on the interview circuit.

Here are three recurring kinds of people I kept coming across:

(1) Ivy Leaguers looking out for "their" network (I went to a state school, & "elis" don't like plebians on their turf). "We hire Ivy League graduates for those jobs."

(2) Executives who were afraid of hiring somebody who would be able to understand what they were doing wrong & identify those responsible for it.

(3) Government goldbrickers & entrenched "seniority".

I interviewed for LOADS of finance-related positions, & it got to be really disheartening to see classmates who barely graduated & had lousy resumes getting plum jobs. I ended up underemployed & underpaid, but "what you do" is more important than "what you get" (& life isn't over yet, so who knows where I'll end up).

Fast-forward a dozen years or so, & commercial banks, investment banks, & all kinds of capital-related businesses (many of which my lesser-qualified associates went to work for) are on the ropes because a bunch of corrupt idjits were at the helms of those ships. The SEC couldn't nab Bernie Madoff even when an analyst reported him half a dozen times (& people think Madoff is a big deal when government has done the same thing to the American people by a factor that is in the hundreds of thousands & shortly will be exploding).

Things didn't make sense back then. Now I get it...

...and T is glowing with schadenfreude.

GarandFan:

"T" - same problem when I got out of school. After 3 years in the private sector, ended up as a cop for 30 years, go figure.

Only one time did I ever see actual "culture" in a large corporation. That was when the Tylenol poisonings happened. The company pulled their product off the shelves and redesigned their packaging.

Cowboy:

OK. I'm staying out of this one.

I think the Statues are Cool!

Amazing freakin blog here. I almost cried while reading it!

Avoid SEO Marketing Services Online at all costs. You know a marketing company stinks when they resort to SPAM to promote themselves. Save your money and hire a REAL pro.

Larry the Dial-Up Guy:

Hmmm. So whut you feller's is sayin' is that "culture" is a lot like compost in the manure bin.

Larry the Dial-Up Guy:

Dang it. I meant "fellers", NOT "feller's."
