Talk about Mass. appeal....

Terwiliger:

I hope he means it & lives up to it. If he does, he will be the prototype for how to neutralize partisan politics.

I also hope he shuts up about his truck. Big whoop.

I drive a truck--a crappy little 80s import that--if I totaled it--I wouldn't be able to afford a bicycle with the proceeds.

President Obama, that's called "living within your means." I didn't take your "Cash for Clunkers" payoff. I make very little money at the moment, but I have no debt.

I have ideas & skills, & I could flourish if you & your cronies would just get out of the way. As long as you don't total the economy, I plan on it anyway--you're just making it take that much longer.

Was wondering when we'd see this.

GarandFan:

I also drive a truck. Guess that makes me a RACIST!

Tom Wms.:

FIINALLY! A clean, young, articulate, nice looking white guy.

GarandFan:

Tom:
Yeah, but I'll bet Harry Reid says that "Scott can talk in the NASCAR dialect if he has to."

Tom Wms.:

There's nothing wrong with talking in the NASCAR dialect. I was a race official for a few years. I can speak three or four of those dialects. Maybe if more of them drove pick ups and spoke a more common dialect, we would be in better shape today.

Terwiliger:

I think what Harry Reid meant to say was "the uneducated urban street-thug dialect", which has long since become "an uneducated suburban I-wish-I-was-a-street-thug dialect". I think in Massachusetts the Scott Brown equivalent would be called the "Southie" dialect.

Not to slag the NASCAR folks, but I find the greater majority of them to be of the "bread & circuses", "here we are, entertain us", "Hey guys! Watch this!" mentality.

For the love of Mike--they watch cars drive counterclockwise for 4 hours (or more) just for the wrecks & to see whoever is in front at the end of it.

How about a quarter-mile drag race some 40 cars wide, declare a winner, have a demolition derby, & go home & read a book?

I'd like to see Jay Leno do a "Jaywalking" sketch or two at a NASCAR event & see if those folks are any better informed than the "man on the street" in L.A.

Tom Wms.:

T:

I have worked in several forms of motor sports. While many of the fans tend to be rabid about the sport; I think the trend to categorize NASCAR fans as being bloated, drunken, uneducated, thrill seekers is a little harsh. There is far more involved than just going in circles. The sport involves innovation, technology, strategy, athletic ability, courage and talent. I think we have gained far more from motor sports than any other sport we watch or play.

While watching accidents can be thrilling, what is truly amazing is that the majority of the participants walk away from most horrifying accidents. The lessons learned in making race cars safer has been passed on to passenger cars and trucks as well. We have all benefited from mechanical technology learned from racing, such as in our brake systems.

I for one do not watch a race for the accidents (I have pulled too many people out of "broken" cars). But, I do enjoy watching talented drivers negotiate through a pack of between 20 and 43 cars, especially when they do it with finesse.

Racing is not for everybody. That's why we have the "ball" sports. If circle track racing is not for you, try watching a road race and focus on what it takes to negotiate the course. If "stock cars" don't make sense to you, watch this weekend's 24 Hours of Daytona. Don't watch all 24 hours, but check it out. There is so much more involved in racing, but you have to look for it.

Sorry about the rant, but I do love a good book and I am tired of Jay Leno.

Terwiliger:

Hey Tom.

Sorry. I was mainly stirring the pudding. Too much there to respond to, & too little I generally disagree with, but...

BELIEVE IT OR DON'T:

I was in a sports bar discussing politics with a friend (a then-mechanic & a NASCAR fan who I will readily admit is considerably smarter than I am) while a NASCAR event was on the bigscreen. Some folks at another table were listening in, & asked to join in on the conversation. After a while, there were about a dozen of us talking about health care (namely low med school quotas designed to restrict the number of doctors & keep M.D. salaries artificially high). One of the patrons who had joined in asked me, "Well, what would you do?" When I said I'd prefer to see anybody who could run a predetermined gauntlet get licensed (instead of cherry-picking from the "top of the curve") & let the free market decide, the masses that had joined our conversation nearly mobbed me, accusing me of "Being a Communist" & "Wanting things like they are in Russia" (after the melee was averted, my buddy & I learned that most of them thought "free market economy" meant "distribution of 'free' goods & services").

TNSTAAFL--in spite of the fact that, that afternoon, several NASCAR fans offered to pay for my burger as a "peace" gesture.

Tom Wms.:

Good morning, T. Thanks. That wasn't necessarily directed at you, it was directed at the general perception.

As to your mob scene; I'm glad you guys were able to stand up for your principles and come out of it unscathed. That a great example how misconception can lead to unbridled prejudice. Perhaps we should all be required to take a freshman level course in poly-sci before our voters' registrations are renewed. Have a great day.

By the way, wasn't last night's TV programming fun?

Terwiliger:

I sat in a "poli/sci" class for one day as an undergraduate (ca. 1988-89). As soon as the first session was over, I dropped it. I would say it was more "Commie/Propaganda".

I agree with you wholeheartedly on the need for restricted suffrage & a voter competency test--just not one based on "information" learned in a liberal arts college "poli/sci" class.

I'm having fun watching MSLSD (in small bits). Total meltdown. They take the concept of "Pretzel Logic" to all new lows.

Sorry for the huge review, but I'm really loving the new Zune, and hope this, as well as the excellent reviews some other people have written, will help you decide if it's the right choice for you.

If you're still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you'll know which is right for you.
