How to Draw President G.W.Bush

howTO.gif

Amaze your friends! Next time you're killing time at a bar with your friends, whip out a cocktail napkin and a ballpoint pen and let it rip. Hilarity ensues....

1. Start with a diamond shape.

2. High up towards the top of the diamond, draw two eyebrows that look like caterpillars mating. Add a short, straight bridge of the nose with very wide, flaring nostrils. Feel free to exaggerate here.

3. Bush has a long upper lip and a smallish mouth shaped kind of like a turtle's. Add a little shadow underneath the lower lip and some crease lines around the nose and eyes. Add a crappy, old white guy's haircut. Stupid bangs intensifies his redneck roots.

4. Jumbo ears. Can't go wrong here.

5. Add a suit and tie. Hell, he can be wearing anything. Your the editorial artist. Make a statement.

6. Ink accordingly. Everyone inks differently. Be creative.

There, now. Go get syndicated and live in a refrigerator box for the next few years and you're well on your way to being a professional editorial catoonist with a life expectancy of the average rabbit.

Painting Idea

In PhotoShop, I combined an old watercolor landscape I found in my portfolio with a simple figure photo from a book. I think this might be an interesting way to explore painting compositions without getting my fingers dirty,

This is my take on the legend of Prometheus. The triangle shape is the alchemical symbol for Earth.

Sketch Book

SKEETch.jpg

The drawing on the left is the first sketch for the Matamoros cover. I was trying to involve a taped up image that would feature a likeness of Sobietti, the main character. The writers and I decided it would be more dramatic if he were actually in the scene.

I'm sure the "taped up drawing" motif can work. Gotta find the right project.

At the Museum...

I don't think art is propaganda; it should be something that liberates the soul, provokes the imagination and encourages people to go further. It celebrates humanity instead of manipulating it.

Greek legend has it she emerged from the sea and was married off to Hephaestus, metalsmith to the gods.

The story has a "Julia Roberts Marries Lyle Lovett" vibe....

I'm not absolutely sure what's going on here, but I'm guessing it has to do with world domination.

Story Idea

Intergalactic-Naturalist.jpg

This is an early attempt at telling a science fiction tale about an intergalactic census taker. A protege discovers his mentor is utterly lost among the vast star systems and the only clues to his whereabouts are these sketches and notations from a book found at his last known location.

The tiny scraps of writing are his personal notes on the flora and fauna of his last assignment.

The whole book is a compendium of the census taker's interplanetary missions.

The Idea Takes Hold

Every once in a while, I'll shoot a photo that has the roots of a nice painting. This is my friend Kimberly Jurgen, a local actress. She was gracious enough to sit for me one fine day near Emory University.

A Little Unsolicited Advice...

The whole point of keeping up a daily sketchbook is letting your imagination go where ever it wants. No judgement. Even it turns out a bit obscure.

ALL YOU YOUNGSTERS OUT THERE WHO WANT TO DRAW FOR A LIVING: Draw every day in your sketchbook! VOLUME, VOLUME, VOLUME!

Nepal, '92

coffee.jpg

When I was traveling through the lower Himalayas, I was cajoled to do a mural for a village coffee shop. I decided an "aged" trompe l'oeil effect was a perfect way for the sign to be visually intergrated with the surrounding shops. The man in the foreground is Bob, the barista whom I came to trust with my life.

Believe it or don't.
